URS should be notified immediately of a non-retired or retired member's death so appropriate financial settlement can be made to the designated beneficiaries. According to Utah Code Ann 49-11-608(2), "A person cashing a benefit check to which that person is not entitled is in violation of Section 76-6-501."
Continuing monthly benefits are generally paid only to the member's spouse at the time of retirement or at the time of the member's death, depending on the specific system from which the member retired. Continuing monthly benefit payments are not payable or transferable to children or other beneficiaries.
