The following employees may exempt from retirement coverage by filing a URS exemption form with our office before the date of exemption:
- The commissioner of public safety
- The elected sheriff or the appointed chief of police of a public safety organization.
A Request for Exemption (Form MERQ-2) must be filed with our office. If the members identified below are eligible to retire they may exempt from retirement coverage, retire, receive a monthly retirement allowance, and continue in their elected or appointed office without penalty:
- Elected sheriffs in the Public Safety Noncontributory and Contributory Retirement Systems
- Appointed chiefs of police in the Public Safety Noncontributory Retirement System, and
- The commissioner of public safety.
All other members receiving a monthly retirement allowance cannot exempt and continue employment with the same employer. |
